Coastal Surroundings Protection Programe

The Coastal Surroundings Protection Programme mobilizes communities, schools, local businesses and authorities in Mogadishu to reduce marine litter, improve waste handling at beaches and restore coastal habitats through regular cleanups, waste infrastructure and public education. The campaign combines hands-on action (cleanups + recycling points), behaviour change communications (radio, WhatsApp, social media, mosque/school outreach) and local partnerships to create measurable reductions in coastal pollution and stronger local stewardship.

  • Goal: Reduce coastal pollution and protect marine life in Mogadishu.

  • Key activities: Monthly beach cleanups, installation of waste bins, radio & social media awareness, school and youth engagement.

  • Target groups: Beach users, youth, students, fishers, local communities, and small businesses.

  • Approach: Community-led action supported by local authorities and environmental groups.

  • Impact: Cleaner beaches, improved public awareness, and stronger community ownership of coastal protection.

Before this program, our beaches were full of waste. After joining the Coastal Surroundings Protection Programme, I now see real change and stronger community responsibility. I am proud to be part of protecting Mogadishu’s coastline for future generations.”
